The Phoenix Pool Owner's Seasonal Guide — What Your Pool Needs Every Time of Year

One of the things that surprises new Arizona pool owners — and trips up plenty of longtime residents too — is how much your pool's needs change throughout the year. Phoenix doesn't have the dramatic seasons that most of the country does, but the swings in temperature, sun intensity, rain, and usage patterns have a real impact on what your pool requires from month to month.

Here's a straightforward breakdown of what to expect and what to watch for across the four seasons in the Valley.

Winter (December – February)

What's Happening: Cooler water temperatures slow algae growth and reduce chemical demand. Evaporation slows. Pools get less use. Many pool owners make the mistake of assuming less use means less maintenance.

Winter is actually a great time for your pool — lower chemical demand, easier to keep balanced, and equipment runs less hard. But it still needs weekly attention. Chemistry still shifts, especially on days with wide temperature swings. Algae still grows, just more slowly. And this is the ideal time to address any repairs, equipment upgrades, or surface work you've been putting off — before the heat returns and the pool gets heavy use again.

Watch for: Algae starting in shaded corners, equipment issues that are easier to address now, any cracks or surface concerns worth handling before summer.

Spring (March – May)

What's Happening: Temperatures start climbing, pool use picks up, and the demands on your chemistry and equipment begin increasing rapidly. Spring is when neglected pools start showing the consequences.

Spring is the most important time of year to be on top of your pool. As water warms up, algae growth accelerates dramatically. Stabilizer levels need to be checked and adjusted ahead of the intense UV exposure that's coming. Equipment that has been running quietly through winter needs a closer look — filters, pumps, and any automation should be in good shape before the busy season hits.

Phoenix also gets dust storms and winds in spring that can rapidly introduce debris and contaminants. After any significant wind event, your pool's chemistry should be checked and adjusted.

Watch for: Rising chemical demand, algae beginning in walls and steps, filter pressure increasing as more debris enters the water, any equipment that's been overdue for service.

Summer (June – September)

What's Happening: Extreme heat, heavy pool use, intense UV radiation, monsoon rains. This is the most demanding season for pool chemistry and equipment — and the season where inadequate maintenance shows up fastest.

Arizona summers are where pool maintenance really earns its keep. Water temperatures push into the 90s. UV burns through chlorine faster than most people can add it without adequate stabilizer. Monsoon rains in July and August dilute chemistry and introduce organic material that spikes chemical demand. Heavy swimmer use adds additional load on sanitizer and filtration.

During peak summer, even a properly maintained pool needs close attention every week. Skipping service — or receiving service that doesn't fully address chemistry — can turn a clear pool green within days. This is not the time for guesswork or shortcuts.

Watch for: Chlorine demand spiking after monsoons, calcium buildup on tile lines as water evaporates and concentrates minerals, pump baskets filling faster, any equipment working harder than usual.

Fall (October – November)

What's Happening: Temperatures drop, pool use decreases, and chemical demand moderates. Fall is the recovery season — a chance to stabilize chemistry and address anything summer stressed.

Fall is generally the most forgiving time of year for pool owners, but it's not the time to go on autopilot. As water cools, stabilizer and chemical levels need to be adjusted downward from the high-demand summer settings. Leaves and debris from trees become a bigger issue as they drop, adding organic material that affects chemistry and clogs filters and baskets.

Fall is also a good time to assess your pool after the summer season — check for any surface wear, equipment fatigue, or calcium deposits that need attention before they become more serious over winter.

Watch for: Leaves and debris overwhelming baskets and filters, calcium deposits on tile and equipment from summer evaporation, any equipment that's been running hard all summer showing signs of wear.

Year-Round: What Never Changes

Regardless of the season, the fundamentals of good pool maintenance stay the same. Weekly chemistry testing across all parameters — not just chlorine. Consistent brushing and cleaning. Equipment monitoring. And a service report so you always know where your pool stands.

The seasonal factors shift the frequency and focus of attention, but they don't change what good maintenance looks like. A pool that gets proper care year-round rarely has dramatic problems at any point in the year — because problems are caught early, before they become serious.
